SEEBLOCKS.eu launches Second Public Consultation on Blockchain and DLT Standardisation
30 July 2024
SEEBLOCKS.eu has launched its second public consultation to help shape the future of blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) standards in Europe. This initiative, starting in June 2024, aims to gather industry insights on key priorities and explore how emerging standards can support the development of blockchain infrastructure.
The consultation comes at a crucial time, as the EU Standardisation Rolling Plan 2024 has identified blockchain and DLT as pivotal for innovation in the Digital Single Market. These technologies are seen as providing a trusted, decentralised infrastructure for services beyond the financial sector.
Building on the success of its first consultation in December 2023, which garnered 50 responses from across 23 countries, with 38% of participants representing startups and SMEs, SEEBLOCKS.eu is now seeking broader input to inform its "Landscape & Gap Analysis Report." This report will contribute to the development of future blockchain standardisation efforts in Europe, aligning with the EU's Rolling Plan for ICT Standardisation.
The first consultation provided a wealth of information from a diverse group of stakeholders. While 36% of respondents primarily identified with the blockchain and DLT domain, the consultation captured insights from various technology areas. Notable sectors included cybersecurity (14%), fintech/regtech (10%), Internet of Things (10%), and the metaverse (8%). Nearly 75% of respondents were expert contributors to open standards development, with 64% having made contributions to Standard Development Organizations (SDOs) and 42% to open blockchain protocols.
The top four priority areas identified for emerging blockchain standards were identity management, data provenance, governance, and tokenisation of assets and exchange. Download the full report with the outcomes of the first public consultation.
Building on these insights, the second consultation aims to capture current industry priorities and understand where emerging standards can provide support and value. The initiative aligns with the EU Standardisation Rolling Plan 2023, which identifies blockchain and DLT as crucial for innovation in the Digital Single Market.
The project emphasises the importance of stakeholder participation in ensuring that standardisation efforts reflect European interests and values. SEEBLOCKS.eu is committed to creating a shared, co-created vision that benefits all parties and guarantees consideration of European interests in the global blockchain landscape.
Stakeholders from various sectors, particularly startups and SMEs, are encouraged to participate. The consultation offers an opportunity to influence the direction of blockchain and DLT standards, potentially impacting areas such as cybersecurity, fintech, and the Internet of Things.
The online consultation will close on October 4th, 2024. Interested parties are urged to contribute their insights to help shape the future of blockchain technology in Europe.
