Use cases

SEEBLOCKS plays a key role in advancing blockchain adoption by supporting standardized frameworks, interoperability, and regulatory alignment. Through research and funding, they help integrate blockchain for secure, privacy-focused data sharing while promoting compliance automation in line with EU regulations - critical for widespread adoption. An important component of the process of technology standardization is the documentation of a rich set of representative use cases for that technology. During the pre-standardisation phase, the analysis of these use cases can help the standards developing organization to determine the scope of the standard – the breadth of applications that the standard must cover. It allows the standard to be robust and resilient in the face of technological evolution, and limit the frequency of required new editions. Several organizations are involved in the collection of blockchain/DLT use cases, such as the European Blockchain Sandbox.

SEEBLOCKS.eu has undertaken its own original research in the identification of new and interesting blockchain/DLT use cases, in particular through its hackathons, where both students and independent actors came together to present and discuss their applications, many of them in heretofore underrepresented sectors.

ETH Dublin, May 2024

For many participants, ETH Dublin in 2024 was a transformative experience. Many projects aimed at social good, such as platforms for financial inclusion and tools for enhancing digital privacy, reflecting the participants’ desire to create technology that benefits society as a whole. ETH Dublin is for those passionate about using emerging technology for good. It brings together the brightest minds in Ethereum to share insights, showcase projects, and explore the future of decentralised technology with insightful talks, networking opportunities, and hands-on workshops that will level up your skillset. Four of the teams provided solutions that demonstrated the beneficial application of standardized descriptive methods:

  1. Improved Swap Transactions. One-click confirmation for asset swap transactions.
  2. SafeTi - Aiding the Irish Rental Crisis with Trustless Computing. A trustless solution to balance incentives on both the renter and landlord sides of the rental equation.
  3. Transforming Crypto into Instant Loans. A regulated platform enabling asset holders to leverage their assets without selling them.
  4. Decentralized Clinical Trials. Enhancing clinical trial management in pharmaceuticals with blockchain-based NFT systems.

ETH Sofia, October 2024

ETHSofia brought together developers and top web3 companies in Bulgaria’s capital for a three-day hackathon. Over 80 participants engaged in workshops exploring real-world blockchain applications across various sectors, an activity that is managed every year by the ETH Sofia conference. Numerous use cases were contributed including:

  1. Incognito. A privacy-focused marketing platform using AI to analyze wallet activity for targeted campaigns without revealing personal data.
  2. ZKLauren. A modular system using zero-knowledge proofs for company tax declarations, leveraging an Oracle network for trusted currency conversions.
  3. EcoSofia.  A blockchain and AI-powered platform revolutionizing urban sustainability while ensuring compliance with ISO standards.

Our hackathon participants documented their use cases according to an innovative template devised by SEEBLOCKS.eu strategic lead Fiona Delaney. This form of documentation focuses on the core blockchain/DLT capabilities that are involved in the use case, facilitating the identification of key characteristics of the application that must be covered in eventual standardisation activities.

In addition to our original set of use cases, we have included other significant ones in our collection that have been contributed by third parties, and we welcome contributions from others who are interested in having their innovative use cases included in our collection.

Happy exploring!
