Call for Blockchain & DLT Use Cases: show your story and shape blockchain standardisation efforts

USE CASES

SEEBLOCKS.eu is collecting Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) use cases across different business sectors, which will be considered for inclusion not only in the standard “ISO24878 New and emerging DLT/blockchain use cases” under development, but also in emerging blockchain standards.

Use cases are the lifeblood of blockchain and DLT. Together with standardisation, they foster a virtuous cycle of innovation in this space. Here’s how: a good use case in blockchain/DLT illustrates an application of the technologies in a particular area. This alone is valuable for informing both professionals and the public about the ways in which these technologies can contribute to numerous areas in both the business and social spheres. Often the use case is also innovative, illustrating an entirely new kind of application that may have not been possible using other technologies. But a good use case will also reveal areas in which standardisation is required to realise the full potential of its innovative features – for example, a standard for interoperability that allows extension of the use case across borders. In turn, the realisation of a standard (as another example, the standardisation of permissioned systems in the application area) will pave the way for the arrival of yet more innovative use cases exploiting conformance to the standard to offer even more capabilities.

SEEBLOCKS.eu is deeply involved in the effort to ensure that use cases are gathered and documented for maximum usefulness to the blockchain/DLT community. SEEBLOCKS.eu Strategic Lead Fiona Delaney led the development of the new (February 2024) ISO publication, ISO/TR 6277:2024: Blockchain and distributed ledger technologies — Data flow models for blockchain and DLT use cases. This new technical report consolidates a set of system-level models from ISO 23257:2022 and ISO/TR 3242:2022 to give a data-flow-centric description framework for blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) use cases.

But that’s not all: SEEBLOCKs.eu has been actively engaging with the ETHGlobal movement, which uses community events to educate, test and raise awareness about novel applications and new use case domains. In May 2024, SEEBLOCKS.eu sponsored the ETHDublin hackathon, with a challenge to complete a standard format project documentation based on ISO AWI 24878 new and emerging use cases. The winning use cases give us a flavour of the innovative approach to social issues with decentralised socio-technical solutions. These use cases span an impressive range of sectors: medicine; finance; emergency private aid toward individuals (for example, in countries such as Ukraine); and housing rental:

  • Decentralized Clinical Trials: Enhancing Clinical Trial Management in Pharmaceuticals with Blockchain-Based NFT Systems

  • Transforming Crypto into Instant Loans: Regulated lending intermediary

  • Ethereum vouched aggregator nexus: Improved swap UX - One-click confirmation for asset swap operations

  • Privacy preserving emergency financing: helping needy individuals in troubled areas while preserving privacy.

  • Aiding the Irish Rental Crisis with Trustless Computing: resolving issues on both renter and landlord sides.

And it doesn’t end here. SEEBLOCKS.eu is also a sponsor of ETHSofia, coming up between 17-18 October. Here we will be gathering even more use cases.

But our initiative is not limited to only ETHGlobal events. This unique opportunity to spotlight emerging innovations is open to all, at any time.
